Key Points at a Glance – Julia Letlow Defeats John Fleming
- Julia Letlow will win the Republican nomination for Senate in Louisiana, CNN’s Decision Desk projects, defeating state Treasurer John Fleming in a runoff in which she made her endorsement from President Donald Trump a centerpiece of her pitch.
- The Associated Press called the Julia Letlow John Fleming Louisiana race at 8:44 p.m., just 44 minutes after polls closed. Letlow won 57% to Fleming’s 43%.
- In the Democratic runoff, Jamie Davis, a northeast Louisiana crop farmer, defeated Gary Crockett. Letlow and Davis will square off in November in a state Republicans have dominated since 2008.
- The Julia Letlow win all but ensures another Trump ally will join the GOP’s Senate ranks after Republicans in Iowa and Georgia snubbed Trump’s picks for governor earlier in June.
- In the first-round primary on May 16, Letlow earned 45% support, followed by Fleming at 28% and outgoing Sen. Bill Cassidy at 25%, who failed to qualify for the runoff after voting to impeach Trump in 2021.
- Fleming controversially reposted an AI-generated video purportedly showing Letlow supporting DEI policies. Letlow condemned it as “disgraceful and indefensible” and the stunt likely cost Fleming crucial votes.
Julia Letlow Wins Louisiana: What She Said in Her Victory Speech
In her victory speech, Letlow thanked Trump for his endorsement and called him “the greatest president this country has ever had,” adding: “I will fight for our families. I will fight for our farmers. I will fight for our teachers. I will fight for our law enforcement. Every breath I have left, I will be fighting for Louisiana.”
Trump reacted immediately on Truth Social: “Julia Letlow WON in Louisiana, beating conclusively a very strong and smart opponent. Congratulations to Julia. She will be a truly GREAT Senator!”
Julia Letlow John Fleming Louisiana: How the Runoff Was Fought
Fleming had ads highlighting Letlow’s previous public support for diversity, equity and inclusion policy, which Trump has tried to eliminate. Letlow said she supported DEI while interviewing for the position of president of the University of Louisiana-Monroe in 2020, but said she has since changed her position after seeing “it for what it was.”
Despite Trump’s endorsement, the ideological differences in the GOP race were relatively scant. Fleming also campaigned on his support for a “pro-Trump agenda,” describing himself as a “MAGA conservative” and touting his time working in the first Trump White House.
What Comes Next: The November General Election
Letlow will be heavily favored in November in the deep-red state, where no Democrat has been elected to the Senate since 2008 and Republicans hold all statewide offices in Louisiana.
Davis, however, vowed to run a competitive campaign, and both Democratic candidates promoted addressing the cost of living and protecting social safety nets.
