Stuck at 37 Percent Even After "Ending" a War: New Polls Show Trump's Iran Deal Hasn't Moved a Single Needle on His Approval Rating

Key Points at a Glance – New Polls Show Trump’s Iran Deal Hasn’t Moved

He flew home from Versailles with a signed peace deal, a reopened Strait of Hormuz, and a story about ending a four-month war. The polls released two days later did not care.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating holds steady at 37% in the latest poll released Friday, unchanged from May despite his administration signing a memorandum of understanding with Iran this week to end the nearly four-month conflict that has dominated his second term. His approval rating on his handling of the Iran war also remained flat at 34%, showing the deal has not yet shifted public sentiment on the conflict or his broader job performance.

The Economy Is the Real Drag, Not Just Iran

Only one-third of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, a historic low that falls three points below former President Joe Biden’s worst economic approval rating. Trump’s approval on inflation stands at just 22%, and his rating on cost of living, a top voter concern, has remained stuck in the low 20s throughout his second term.

Why the War Itself Stays Unpopular

More than half of Americans surveyed, 53%, said US military action against Iran has gone too far, a six-point decrease from March when the war began. A Nate Silver polling average found just 38% of Americans support the Iran conflict, while 56% oppose it. Fifty-three percent of respondents told YouGov they believe the war has “gone too far,” compared to 25% who say military action has been “about right.”

The Partisan Divide on the Deal Itself

Support for the president’s handling of the war remains lopsidedly partisan. About two-thirds, 65%, of US adults disapprove of how Trump is handling issues with Iran. But while the vast majority of Democrats and independents view Trump’s actions negatively, only 28% of Republicans are unhappy. Even some Republicans interviewed weren’t pleased with the deal, which gives Iran an immediate economic benefit and reopens the strait toll-free for two months.

The White House Pushback

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales told reporters Trump “brokered an excellent, performance-based MOU that advances the interests of the United States,” adding that “what the President has achieved on the battlefield and at the negotiating table is nothing short of remarkable and will strengthen American security for many years to come.”

Trump began his second term with a 52% approval rating in January 2025. The decline accelerated sharply after the Iran war began in late February, when his approval was around 40%, and gas prices climbed 50% during the conflict. With midterms five months away, his approval has now settled into a floor that even a signed peace agreement could not move.
