Key Points at a Glance – Graham Platner Faces Sexual Assault Claim
- Maine resident Jenny Racicot, 41, told Politico that Graham Platner forced himself on her after arriving at her home drunk and uninvited in 2021.
- Platner denied the allegations, saying “any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically false,” but said he was “reflecting on the best path forward.”
- Former state senator Troy Jackson is one possible replacement pick if Platner withdraws before the July 13 deadline.
- Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer vowed not to spend money to beat Susan Collins unless Platner withdraws and is replaced.
- Janet Mills, who dropped out of the primary in April, is also being mentioned as a possible replacement by party strategists.
- The Maine Democratic Party chair, vice chair, and executive director issued a joint statement calling on Platner to withdraw.
Graham Platner Jenny Racicot Allegation: What She Said and Why It Is Credible to Investigators
Racicot told Politico she remembered Platner “grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful of me” and “the specific moment where I thought to myself, like, ‘This is no longer my choice.'”
Politico reviewed messages between Racicot and her therapist and spoke to two people she told about the incident in 2023, and the man she dated after Platner confirmed she had told him about the assault long before Platner was a Senate candidate.
The corroboration is what separates this allegation from a timing attack. Three separate witnesses, a therapist’s contemporaneous messages, and a boyfriend who was told years before the campaign began all point to the same account.
The July 13 Deadline: Everything You Need to Know About What Happens Next
Under Maine state law, Democrats could replace Platner on the ballot if he were to drop out by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 13.
If he did so, the state Democratic Party would then have two weeks to put forward a replacement candidate.
Troy Jackson, the progressive logger who ran for governor and was endorsed by Bernie Sanders, is now the most-discussed replacement option. Former Gov. Janet Mills, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and former CDC director Nirav Shah are also being mentioned as possible substitutes inside Democratic circles.
Bernie, Susan Collins, and the National Stakes
Collins denounced the allegations against her Senate rival but refused to weigh in on the internal Democratic Party dynamics at play, saying “it is not up to me to choose the Democratic nominee for Senate.”
Bernie Sanders, who had endorsed Platner and campaigned with him, had not issued a statement as of Monday evening, leaving Maine Democrats watching their progressive wing carefully for any signal about whether the movement Platner built was transferable to a replacement candidate.
The seat is the Democrats’ best realistic Senate pickup anywhere in the country. The clock runs out at 5 p.m. Monday, July 13.
