Four months of war. Dozens of ceasefire attempts. Thirty-eight times Trump said a deal was “imminent.” And then, at a dining table in the Palace of Versailles, it finally happened.

President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian both digitally signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday laying out terms for ending the war. The White House confirmed that Trump signed the memorandum on Wednesday while at dinner at the Palace of Versailles with French President Emmanuel Macron. Asked by a reporter about the signing while leaving Versailles, Trump said, “It’s signed. Signed in Versailles. Just signed it.”

What the MOU Actually Says

The interim agreement declares an intent to bring about an “immediate and permanent termination of military operations” in the US-Israeli war with Iran, which began February 28. Both sides will commit to further talks toward a more substantive “final deal” within 60 days, extendable with mutual consent. The MOU stipulates that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen, with Iran agreeing to allow “safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days only.”

First Tankers Are Already Moving

At least two National Iranian Tanker Company VLCC supertankers named DIONA and HERO2 have exited the US Navy blockade perimeter carrying a combined total of 3.8 million barrels of Iranian crude oil between them, TankerTrackers said on X, later adding that a third tanker had exited. Iran can begin exporting oil as soon as the MOU is signed.

Oil Prices Drop Sharply

The price for a barrel of Brent crude oil fell 1.6% to $78.31. It is still above its roughly $70 price from before the war, but well below its $100-plus price from a few weeks ago.

The $300 Billion Reconstruction Fund

The MOU says the United States, together with its regional partners, will ensure the financing of at least $300 billion for a reconstruction fund for Iran. Trump said the US would not contribute to the fund but added that he could not stop other countries from investing in Iran.

Friday Signing in Switzerland and What Comes Next

According to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the signing of the MOU between the United States and Iran is scheduled for Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland. The negotiations on a final settlement are set to begin Friday as well.
