“They Started Getting Very Boring”-“Enough is Enough”: Iran Suspends Talks, Netanyahu Defies Withdrawal Demands, and Trump’s Iran Deal Faces Its Biggest Threat Yet in Lebanon

Key Points at a Glance – Trump’s Iran Deal Faces Its Biggest Threat Yet in Lebanon

  • Iran suspended peace talks with the US after Israel announced plans to bomb Beirut and expanded its invasion of Lebanon.
  • Trump personally called Netanyahu and urged him not to raid Beirut, then separately called Hezbollah representatives to agree on a ceasefire.
  • Netanyahu’s public statement after the call with Trump suggested he was calling his own shots: “Israel’s position remains unchanged. The military will continue to operate as planned in southern Lebanon.”
  • Trump told CNBC talks were taking “too long” and said he didn’t care if they collapsed, adding they had “started to get very boring.”
  • Minutes later, Trump posted online: “Talks are continuing at a rapid pace” in a direct contradiction of his own CNBC comments.
  • Iran’s Revolutionary Guard-linked media said Iran was saying “enough is enough” and halting talks through all mediators.

Just hours after Trump told Americans to “just sit back and relax” on the Iran deal, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard-affiliated outlet declared the Islamic Republic had hit its limit.

Iran said “enough is enough,” announcing it was suspending talks via mediators with the United States over the expanding Israeli operation in Lebanon. The move plunged the already fragile US-Iran peace process into its deepest crisis since the MOU was signed at Versailles on June 17.

Netanyahu Defies Trump on Lebanon

The central problem is Israel. Trump signed the Iran MOU which included provisions calling for a cessation of fighting in Lebanon, where Israel has been battling Iranian-backed Hezbollah. But Netanyahu never agreed to those terms and has been expanding his operations in the country since the MOU was signed.

Netanyahu put out a terse statement after his call with Trump saying he told the US president Israel would bomb Beirut if Hezbollah does not hold its fire, and that Israel’s position remains unchanged.

Trump Caught Between Tel Aviv and Tehran

Trump called Netanyahu and asked him not to raid Beirut and to turn his troops around. He said he also spoke with representatives of Hezbollah and got them to agree to stop shooting at Israeli soldiers in south Lebanon.

The difficult reality is that Trump and Netanyahu launched into this war on Iran together. Getting out of it together is a fundamentally different challenge when the two leaders have completely different definitions of what peace actually looks like.

Mediators Scrambling to Salvage the Process

Pakistan, Qatar, and Turkey were all pushing to salvage talks after Iran’s suspension announcement, with a flurry of diplomatic calls throughout Tuesday. Trump’s decision to publicly signal disinterest in the talks while simultaneously posting that they were “continuing at a rapid pace” left diplomatic partners confused about where the US actually stands.

The Lebanon front that nobody wanted to talk about is now the only thing anyone in the deal can talk about. Netanyahu says he decides when it ends. Iran says that is unacceptable. And somewhere in the middle, Trump is calling both sides and trying not to lose a deal he has already declared signed.
