Ryan Gosling walked on stage Saturday during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel, officially confirmed as the MCU’s new Ghost Rider.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige made the announcement himself, joking that he’d fielded Ghost Rider casting questions from fans for years before finally having a real answer.
Here’s why this pairing actually makes sense. Gosling told the crowd Ghost Rider is a character he’s wanted to play for a very long time.
The origin behind this project is genuinely unusual too. Gosling and director Shawn Levy are currently filming Star Wars: Starfighter together, set for release in May 2027.
According to Levy, the two spent their downtime on that set daydreaming about Ghost Rider, gradually building out ideas between takes.
That casual brainstorming eventually turned serious. Levy recalled telling Gosling directly, “let’s ride,” setting the entire project into motion.
Levy isn’t new to Marvel either. He previously directed Deadpool & Wolverine, one of the studio’s most successful recent releases.
For anyone unfamiliar with the character, Johnny Blaze’s story centers on a stunt motorcyclist who sells his soul to save his father, only to become bonded with a demon named Zatharos.
That deal transforms him into the character’s signature look, a flaming skulled biker who’s become one of Marvel’s most visually striking antiheroes.
Gosling isn’t the first actor to take on the role either. Nicolas Cage played Johnny Blaze in two Sony produced films back in 2007 and 2011.
Gabriel Luna later portrayed a different version, Robbie Reyes, during a memorable run on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
