Sometimes the movement nobody in Washington fully understood just rewrote the rules of a whole state’s politics.
Businessman Zach Lahn defeated Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa’s Republican primary for governor, as party voters rejected President Donald Trump’s late endorsement in the race. It is the first time in the midterm elections that a Trump-backed candidate for governor, the House, or the Senate has lost a primary.
How MAHA Beat MAGA in Farm Country
Lahn found support as a Republican candidate who has affiliated himself with the Make America Health Again movement led nationally by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy and who has criticized Republicans’ approach to issues like water quality and the state’s cancer rates. Though the four other candidates had less initial name recognition than Feenstra, Lahn was able to gain traction as he overtook Feenstra in fundraising.
Lahn’s Victory Speech
“I fear every day we are losing the Iowa we love. We’ve lost 10,000 family farms since 2000. Our young people are leaving faster than 46 other states because they don’t see enough opportunity here,” Lahn said. “Wall Street hedge funds and foreign interests are buying and selling their land, driving up costs, so our kids are priced out.”
Trump World Reacts
“Clearly a Randy problem. Barely won his own district,” a Trump world strategist said in a text message. “But, it is what it is. So we go with Lahn.”
Feenstra announced his concession at his campaign watch party in Hull Tuesday night. “I just called Zach Lahn and said, hey, you’ve got to carry this torch, we’ve gotta make sure to beat Rob Sand and I’m all in to help him out,” Feenstra said.
Iowa just told Washington that MAHA has a political future beyond social media posts and White House panels. Lahn now carries that flag into a November general election that could further reshape the American political landscape.
