Key Points at a Glance – Jason Watson Arrested on Capitol Steps

  • Air Force Major Jason Watson was arrested by Capitol Police on Wednesday, July 2, after delivering a speech calling for the impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
  • Watson is the first-ever active-duty commissioned officer in the military to publicly protest for the impeachment, conviction and removal of Trump and Vance.
  • Watson, an active-duty service member with a military career dating over 20 years, is currently on leave from his post as a logistics readiness officer in Poland.
  • Watson was first escorted to the bottom of the steps by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who then left the area, causing the officers to arrest Watson under 22-1307 Crowding, Obstructing and Incommoding.
  • Public dissent within active-duty military ranks is rare as service members are required to follow orders in accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which criminalizes contemptuous words against the president under Article 88.
  • The Air Force has announced it’s launching a full investigation into the incident.

Major Jason Watson Arrest: What He Actually Said on the Capitol Steps

Watson said: “Our Constitution binds us all together as Americans. Like countless veterans before me, military members serving now, I’ve devoted my life in service to our Democratic Republic. Always doing my best to honor my oath and protect America against foreign threats. But the greatest threat to our Democratic Republic is not a foreign one.”

Watson added that “when the President of the United States orders military action against foreign countries absent an emergency scenario where American interests are under imminent dire threat, as was done with Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran, that’s an unconstitutional usurpation of Congress’s authority and a violation of the War Powers Clause,” adding that “these violations resulted in the deaths of 13 service members and injuries of hundreds more.”

Why Major Jason Watson Says He Is Not a Democrat

Watson said he is not a Democrat and knows “next to nothing” about Green’s policy positions, but said Green is “the only member of Congress that has demonstrated the courage and conviction” needed to impeach Trump.

Jessica Denson, the founder of Removal Coalition, said Watson had reached out to them via email and understood the potential consequences of his actions, risking not only his military career and pension, but potential prosecution.

What Happens to Major Jason Watson Next

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink addressed the incident on social media, saying: “I expect every Airman and Guardian to comply with all laws and policies governing personal conduct, political participation, and the wear of the uniform.”

Officials would likely consider whether Watson was on duty or off duty, the fact he was in uniform, whether he identified himself as an Air Force officer, and whether his actions could reasonably be interpreted as representing the military.

Watson signed up to defend the Constitution. On July 2, he argued in uniform that the greatest threat to that document now sits in the White House. The Air Force investigation will decide what that decision costs him.
